FOLLOW YOUR HEART MAY BE GOOD ADVICE IF THIS INCLUDES FOLLOWING THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. Unless People Have Reasons To Follow A Given Doctrine, Set of Precepts Or Even A Person, Then No One Will Follow For Long. Like a dog following its nose, the person will sniff here and sniff there without any purpose or reason to do so, other than for the sake of having a smell.

If by the word “follow” you mean to accept the guidance of what are the only words written by the Finger of God, there are good reasons to acknowledge and comply with them.
  • I have seen a limit to all perfection, but your commands are boundless. (Psalm 119:96 WEB)
  • I have seen a limit to all perfection, but thy commandment is exceedingly broad. (Psalm 119:96 RSV)
Prohibition of murder, stealing, and bearing false witness, rather than telling the truth, has to be good guidance. Not to follow those injunctions is tantamount to hating oneself—revenge does not lead to a healthy life style.

Murder, stealing, and bearing false witness are only three of the Ten Commandments. The other seven commandments people tend to be ambivalent about.

Adultery has different definitions within various cultures that adhere to contrasting sexual mores. These cultures can be subcultures within a broader culture. Americana has many subcultures. Islam has different sects. Africa also has many tribal differences, not to mention what exists in South America and Asia.

In Thailand, lady-boys are acceptable. Afghanistan has its own lady-boys. In Islam and among African traditions, a man may have four wives at any time, but to have a fifth wife at the same time is considered adultery.

The Bible has a different take on adultery. God created man and woman to become the image of God. Anything outside of this becomes adultery and is prohibited if a society is to possess righteousness in relationships. This follows through into the nuclear family being the basis of society.

Honoring one’s parents is a directive from God. But if people are adulterous then children have no hope of inheriting the promise of God by honoring their parents. Instead, society will be permeated with evil desires, which originate from covetousness, that lead to adultery, jealousy, envy, hatred, murder, false witness and a disregard for God.

Instead of everybody being at peace and learning the advantages of resting in God’s provision, there is anxiety and unrest in the communities.

The Sabbath of Exodus exists for a different reason than the Sabbath of the Mosaic covenant found in the book of Deuteronomy (5:5-15). The Sabbath of Exodus is to be remembered and not observed, as is the case of the Sabbath of Deuteronomy. Nevertheless, both have to do with the Creator God.

However, in Exodus, although not explicit, the use of the word “remember”, in respect to the Sabbath, is an invitation for people to exercise their volition, consider why they are born to die, and seek to know the reason why.

The third, second and first commandments all point to a relationship with the Creator.

The reason people should accept the guidance of the Ten Commandments is that these are instructive in more ways than one and point not only to judgment for those who disregard them, but also salvation for those who take heed.
