THE PROPERTIES OF HONEY ARE WELL KNOWN TODAY BUT IN THE DAYS OF JOHN THE BAPTIST THE SCIENCE WAS NOT AS ACCURATE. Who Would Have Thought That Anybody Would Have Liked Eating Locusts. Wild honey is delightful but eating locusts does not seem appealing, but then neither does eating witchetty grubs or huhu grubs seem appealing.

The Bible clearly points to John the Baptist as being the one who ate locusts and wild honey.
  • Now John wore a garment of camel’s hair, and a leather girdle around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey. (Matthew 3:4)
Writing about the nutritional value of locusts, Sirah Dubois quotes from the book Insects written by prolific author zoologist Steve Parker stating:
Locusts, like many insects, are an excellent source of protein. According to the book “Insects” by Steve Parker, species of locusts vary in protein content from about 50 percent of dry weight to almost 60 percent, making them denser in protein than cows.
Baldwyn Torto, The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE), however, says of desert locusts:
They are also rich in proteins, fatty acids and minerals that boost immunity, fight cancer and prevent inflammation of body organs.
Wild honey is one of the most nutritious and beneficial foods that can be consumed. Honey is full of carbohyrdrates, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytonutrients, and antibacterial, antifungal properties.
The vitamins present in honey are B6, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid and certain amino acids. The minerals found in honey include calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and zinc.
For many the idea sounds terrifying that John the Baptist ate only locusts and wild honey, when he came preaching the judgment of God that was coming upon those who refused to repent from their dead works and exercise faith in God; especially, the hypocrites who did not bear fruits of repentance but had an ax already laid at the roots of their existence.

When we understand the nutritional value of locusts and wild honey, we see how wise the man was. Moreover, the medicinal value of raw honey with its antibacterial and antifungal properties also highlights the wisdom of eating of raw honey.

Not only was John the Baptist wise in that he ate the most nutritious foods, he also walked in the power of the Holy Spirit, which came upon him from birth. For he came in the power of the spirit that was upon Elijah.
  • “Remember the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and ordinances that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel. “Behold, I will send you Eli′jah the prophet before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the land with a curse. (Malachi 4:4–6)
  • But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer is heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth; for he will be great before the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God, and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just,to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.” (Luke 1:13–17)
The way of John the Baptist may seem strange to the uninformed (of whom there are many—even though they deny their ignorance) but nutritional science informs us that eating locusts and honey not only provides us with adequate nutrition but also with medicinal properties that prevent infestations of bacteria and fungal organisms.

History Has A Habit Of Happening Over And Over Again; Elijah Is About To Return
